Editor Shot and
Wounded in Kashmir
Srinagar, India, Jul. 10 2002 (INS
News)
--
A editor of Urdu-language daily was shot and wounded
by unidentified gunmen in Kashmir, police said.
Rashid Shahid, editor of the daily , was waiting
for a bus when he was fired at by the gunmen in
the Chanapora locality of Srinagar.
Shahid
was taken to hospital where doctors operated on
him.
"He
has received a bullet each in his neck and arm."
Shahid is the second journalist to have been attacked
in two months in Kashmir, where nearly a dozen journalists
have been killed since the eruption of an armed
separatist insurgency in 1989.
Earlier,
a reporter of the English daily, Zafar Iqbal was
shot and wounded. He is still recovering in hospital.
The
police have blamed the attacks on separatist militants,
but no group has yet claimed responsibility.
In
September 1995 AFP photographer Mushtaq Ali was
killed in a parcel-bomb explosion in the BBC office
in Srinagar. Two other journalists were injured.
